LETTER FROM LUXURY LOCATIONS L ittle beats our unassuming twin isles – especially after the rollercoaster ride of recent years – for giving one a fresh perspective on life. Just ask Lucien Laviscount. The ‘Emily actress Dawnn Lewis – who many will remember from 1980s US sitcom ‘A Different World’ – tells us about her enduring love affair with Antigua, her genre-spanning work and her efforts to give vulnerable youngsters a leg-up in life. The 21st issue of our popular publication also includes a chat with

Many of those who, like Lucien Laviscount, choose here to lay down permanent roots will cite the warm and welcoming nature of the Antiguan and Barbudan people as the definitive factor setting these isles apart. That genuine geniality is just part of what keeps guests returning to these shores year after year. As Emily might say, a little bonjour goes a long way. n Advertising and editorial queries and suggestions should be directed to info@luxurylocations.com

in Paris’ star – who has Antiguan heritage – became the latest to call the country home after the pandemic delivered an almighty reality check, forcing him to re-evaluate what makes him happy. Antigua, he concluded, is where he feels most content, creative and driven. In our exclusive interview on page 52, Lucien reveals the serendipitous break that launched his career, his plans for giving back to his father’s ancestral home and a few of his favourite island hangouts. His character Alfie in the hit Netflix series knows a thing or two about upping sticks and moving to a new country. Antigua may not have the sky-scraping landmarks of Paris but it has plenty of its own quirks and culture – along with a coastline as striking as Emily’s pink velour Louboutin pumps. Lucien is not the only celebrity interview in our latest edition of Luxury Locations Magazine. On page 30, acclaimed

cricketing royalty Curtly Ambrose, plus the record-breaking national rowers currently putting the country on the map for a second time. Within these pages, we aim the spotlight on Antigua and Barbuda’s art and culinary scenes, tell you some of the ways the islands can help boost your health, and give you the lowdown on some of our personal preferred ways to spend time here. Finally, whether you’re lucky enough to live here or are just passing through, don’t miss the chance to peruse the property pages towards the back which feature a selection of exceptional homes for holiday rent or sale. We also delve into the dynamism of the local real estate market, plus the advantages of the country’s citizenship by investment programme.

MANY DREAM OF PACKING UP AND MOVING TO THE LAND OF 365 BEACHES AND ENDLESS SUNSHINE, BUT FEW TAKE THE PLUNGE. WHEN IT COMES TO NOT ONLY MOVING TO OUR ISLAND BUT TRANSFERRING YOUR SKILLSET TO THE CARIBBEAN MODEL, THINGS GET INTERESTING. ROCK SOLID: THE TRIALS AND TRIUMPHS OF 13 YEARS AT THE HELM OF ANTIGUA’S DINING SCENE E ntrepreneur and restaurateur Alex Grimley owns Rocks Group, a collection of four restaurants

guests. We focus very heavily on growth and development of all our employees - from line staff to management. Tell us about the first steps you took to create what is now Rocks Group? I’d been thinking about creating my first restaurant since I was very young. I started in the kitchen when I was 15 years old, so there were building blocks from that point, as I was learning the skills and trade. But it was about 14 years ago when I was working at Carlisle Bay that I realised it was the right time for me to open a restaurant. I felt like I’d done what I needed to there so I started looking for restaurants, but nothing really appealed. I started to get nervous that I hadn’t found the right location and all my savings were drying up so I called Carlisle Bay’s former GM, Andrew Hedley, who was by then working at Jumby Bay. I knew they were looking for an exec chef. When I called him he said,

company, a few other bits including our wine membership programme and we’ve done a number of really fun projects over the years like music albums and clothing lines. The five pillars of the guest experience at our restaurants are the team, the location and setting, the food, the drinks, and the music. To sum it up, I’d say that we’re a people- driven company. We care very much about our team and how they’re all doing, all while delivering an excellent experience for our I’d been thinking about creating my first restaurant since I was very young. scattered across Antigua, as well as an events business and wine membership programme. Alex sat down with us to discuss what it took to build his business in Antigua, and carve out a niche for his ever-expanding company. How did you end up in Antigua? I was working in the Maldives and was approached by a hotel group out of London who at the time were managing the Carlisle Bay resort here in Antigua. They asked if I wanted to join as exec chef. I took the offer and flew out at the end of 2006 for interviews. By 2007 I arrived on island. How would you sum up Rocks Group in a few sentences? Rocks Group is a medium-size hospitality group. We own four restaurants, an events

Alex Grimley says the key to success is adapting to the environment you’re in.

“look, as much as I enjoyed working with you, I found you unmanageable at the end”. And he was absolutely right. That’s when I knew I had to do it on my own because I couldn’t work for anyone else. I then opened Sheer Rocks at 29 years old. What have been the biggest highs and lows over the last 13 years? The first high was of course opening Sheer Rocks, although in a weird way I sort of missed the moment, never stopping to pinch myself. I woke up the day after we opened my dream restaurant and robotically went through my tasks, as if it was normal. I think that reflects both my level of focus at the time, as well as my youth and immaturity. I was able to really be present when we went from one restaurant to two in 2017, opening Catherine’s Café. It started to finally feel like there was momentum and growth in the company. One of the biggest lows was definitely the pandemic. It was the realisation that we couldn’t look after all of our team in that first year and we had to lay people off. I’d had many sleepless nights trying to work out how we were going to navigate things and it didn’t matter how I looked at the numbers or how many alternatives I considered, the only way the company was going to survive was if we laid off all the line staff. I just remember snapping out of this daze while running in the rain, about 20km from home, and crying my eyes out because there was no other solution. That was definitely a low. Being voted Best Restaurant in the Caribbean during the pandemic by the Caribbean Journal was a high. It was the third time Sheer Rocks had been voted but that time felt particularly special. Another was bringing all our staff back after the pandemic. Even seeing staff that didn’t come back move on to bigger and better things, opening their own businesses and being all right despite all the anguish and anxiety; everyone got through it. Other highs included, of course, opening Rokuni and our newest location, Roquita. The group’s most recent venture, a wine and tapas bar, opened in April in English Harbour.

13

How many staff do you employ and what’s the secret to maintaining a happy and dynamic workforce? We were up to 130 staff during Christmas; that thins out over summer. The secret to maintaining happy staff is that there’s no secret. It starts with simple things like making sure everyone has a voice and treating everyone with respect. We try to operate in an environment where line staff can challenge their supervisors, our HR can be contacted any time they have a grievance and we try to always deal with matters in a head-on, mature manner. The main thing is to nurture a strong, positive culture and that’s what we try to maintain as a group. We also try to help our employees

understand the direction in which the company and themselves are moving in. For example, if someone wants to become a supervisor but they’re not ready, we’ll help them understand where they can improve to achieve their goals. We often find ourselves adapting roles to fit certain individuals, understanding where a team member’s passion lies and setting them up for success. Of course it’s by no means flawless and we have our challenges. One in particular is trying to keep the small, family business mentality with our teams as we grow and expand. We are a couple of directors, a dozen managers and lots of troops below so we have to try a bit harder to keep in touch with everyone now, but I think the team in general are happier than ever.

What’s the key to running a successful business in Antigua and Barbuda? Again, there’s no magic answer but the number one thing is understanding that Antigua and Barbuda is not like anywhere else. It’s definitely not like any place I’ve ever lived or been in my life. Everything that seems difficult when you first arrive, like lack of systems, challenges with supply chains and cultural differences, all these things you grow to love the longer you’re here. I see a lot of new restaurants open on island; some are really successful and some come and go, because they think Antigua’s the problem. They don’t realise you have to adapt to the environment you’re in. I think one of the reasons we’re so successful is that we worked really hard

14

to understand Antigua and all our teams. I don’t regard myself purely as Antiguan but I’m definitely a better Brit for living in Antigua. As a company philosophy, we’re not trying to make any of our West Indian teams European and, likewise, we’re not trying to be strictly European restaurants in the West Indies, but we try to find the best of both worlds, meet in the middle and I think that’s been the secret to our success. Your restaurants boast very high standards for quality and overall experience. How do you manage the practical challenges of running a large company on a small island, such as getting supplies in? It’s not necessarily hard to get equipment. You can buy nearly anything and bring it in, but if it costs say $1,000 dollars in the US, it’ll cost you $2,000 dollars by the time you bring it here and clear customs and duty - and that’s if you’re lucky. If something breaks and you need it replacing quickly, parts are often not available here. It could simply be a small part for a fridge or stove so you’re constantly juggling bringing things in and trying to have a stockpile of spares. As for ingredients, we don’t want to just be flying in ingredients from around the world. Though very easy, it is expensive. We definitely always work with local farmers and suppliers, buying everything that they grow, and trying to find the best ways to preserve it all, as quantities and consistency are a challenge.

What’s the most important lesson you’re learned along the way? Is there anything you’d have done differently with hindsight? Gosh! I’m sure if I really thought about it there’s probably many things I would’ve done differently. Wouldn’t we all? I’m not full of regret by any means and I think all those things that we’ve done have led to where I’m sitting today and what I’ve learnt. I’ve regretted maybe losing my temper in the early days at Sheer Rocks but team members that are still with us tell the stories as hilarious memories - I’m much calmer now and more mature I suppose. I think the most important lesson is probably just to be prepared for the unexpected. The minute your expectation is that everything should be a certain way, that’s when you set yourself up for failure. You’ll be angry that it isn’t how you expected, disappointed and you’ll instantly be battling the fact that you feel like things are unfair. When you realise that circumstances change very quickly and accept that, yes, things are unfair, you learn to adapt and that’s the best lesson you can have. What do you know now that you wish you’d known when you opened Sheer Rocks? If I could go back in time and tell my younger self anything, it would be that no matter how hard it is, keep going, because it will all work out. There were definitely days when the

challenges were so tough that I felt like I was never going to get past them and the world felt like it was ending. You just have to remember that all those obstacles that seemed like they were the biggest challenges are now insignificant. I must say though, if I’d known some of the costs that were going to be attached to the business in the future, like the amount of money spent on payroll or repairs, it probably would have scared me off, so there are certain things I’m glad I didn’t know! What are your future plans for the company? Great question! I still have plans for a beach club; I’m trying to find the best spot for that. I’m thinking somewhere on the west coast of Antigua. I still have half an eye on doing something exciting in Barbuda, and definitely in the future we’d love to have a Rocks Group boutique hotel. When I travel, there’s very specific things that I look for when I book a hotel and I believe, amongst all the amazing hotels we have in Antigua, there’s still a gap for the place I’m looking for, so I very much look forward to adding that to Antigua’s tourism product at some point. n Reservations at any Rocks Group restaurant can be made by calling +1 268 463-6161, WhatsApping +1 268 464-5283 or emailing reservations@itsrocksgroup.com.

ENJOY A CUPPA IN THE RAINFOREST Gordon Bennett, those homemade scones and quiches at the Vintage Tea House are jolly scrummy. But you don’t have to be a Brit to appreciate this smashing little place that dishes up generous fare with a Caribbean twist, including local jams, Ploughman’s platters, delicious English muffins, bacon rolls, salads and puds. And all served on vintage china (what else). A real slice of Blighty – in the heart of the Antiguan rainforest. Tea’s up, old chap. www.antiguavintageteahouse.com +1 (268) 774-2366

EXPERIENCE ANTIGUA THE DYSON WAY IT’S NOT ALL WORK, WORK, WORK. AND NEITHER IS IT ALL BEACHES AND SAILING. FROM AQUATIC ADVENTURES TO DELECTABLE DINING, ANTIGUA OFFERS AN ARRAY OF ACTIVITIES TO GET ACTIVE, COOL OFF OR PIG OUT. THESE ARE SOME OF OUR FAMILY’S FAVOURITES.

FARM-TO-TABLE FARE WASHED DOWN WITH A RUM OR TWO We don’t always drink rum but when we do it’s at Fox House. The home-infused varieties of the quintessential Caribbean tipple hit the spot almost as well as the food. The latter comprises a sumptuous selection of farm-to-table fare with dishes like Antigua black pineapple-marinated pork chops, West Indian curry, warm roasted vegetable cous cous, and Creole baked chicken. We love digestifs in the garden by the firepit. thefoxhouseantigua.com +1 (268) 783-4250

START THE FUN WITH A BANG There are beach venues – and then there’s Loose Cannon. Burgers, poke bowls, salads and ceviche don’t get much better than when they’re whipped up by a Michelin-starred chef. Throw in live music, day beds and creative cocktails and it’s starting to look like a party. Antigua’s hottest new spot – fringing Galleon Beach – is funky, family-friendly and totally fabulous. www.loosecannonbeachbar.com +1 (268) 729-1688

DEVELOP A NEW APPRECIATION FOR MOTHER NATURE

Want to get up close and personal with the local wildlife? Antigua Adventures’ eco-tour offers a brush with the pristine ecosystem of North Sound like no other. The 52ft powercat is designed to get into shallow waters and tight reefy spots alike. After bird-watching, snorkelling and caving with this knowledgeable crew of experts you’ll be able to give David Attenborough a run for his money. adventureantigua.com +1 (268) 726 6355

DIG OUT YOUR DANCING SHOES Antigua loves a themed event – and the Red Cap Party is exactly as it sounds. Revellers grab a hat at the door and dance the night away to live music and DJs. It’s held as a precursor to the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta each April and this year we kicked up our heels in the historic surrounds of Shirley Heights. There’s free Mount Gay Rum for the first hour – just be careful not to spill it while navigating those cobble stones.

CHOW DOWN AND CHILL AT WILD TAMARIND It’s not just the sensational views over Ffryes Beach that have put Wild Tamarind on our list of favourites. This super cool hangout is a vision in elegant wicker and wood furnishings and has quite possibly the most diverse culinary offerings on island. Where else can you find deep fried pizza balls, Turkish lamb kofte, aged tenderloin, and Caribbean lobster all on the same menu? The sofas and daybeds make Wild Tamarind the perfect spot to chillax. tamarindhills.com/wild-tamarind-restaurant +1 (268) 736-7047 21

SURF’S UP AT HALF MOON BAY Wanna surf like Kelly Slater – but, ahem, can’t quite master the balance? Do as the Dysons do and grab a bodyboard instead. Antigua’s calm waters make this a family-friendly gig. We love Half Moon Bay which has enough surf to flex some muscle plus cool tide pools where the kids can discover crabs, urchins and snails. Pack supplies for the journey – it’s a long drive from just about everywhere. Did someone say road trip?

GET IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT OF LIFE If there’s a better way to explore the island’s coastline than with the exhilarating thrill and heady freedom of a jet ski we’re yet to discover it. Real Paradise Jet Ski Antigua puts the A in adventure. Their new Yamaha rides are safe for kids and the skis’ nifty navigation enables you to experience more beaches than arguably any other local tour. Professionally trained guides are on hand to show you hidden coves only accessible by water. realparadisejetskitours.com/ jet-ski-antigua +1 (268) 770-7157

FRESH FROM HER TRIP TO THE TWIN ISLES, THE LEGENDARY ACTRESS TALKS EXCLUSIVELY TO LUXURY LOCATIONS MAGAZINE ABOUT HER GENRE-SPANNING CAREER, HER TURBULENT CHILDHOOD AND HER WORK HELPING VULNERABLE YOUNGSTERS BE THEIR ‘BEST SELVES’ DAWNN LEWIS: ‘I’M VERY MUCH IN LOVE WITH ANTIGUA’ F or a multi award-winning global star Dawnn Lewis is refreshingly candid. She’s unflinching when recounting who’s accrued as many headlines as accolades over a four-decade career,

why her Broadway role in ‘The Tina Turner Musical’ – arguably one of her toughest to date – struck a chord on account of her own experiences with domestic violence, both from witnessing it as a child to suffering herself at the hands of an abusive husband. And again when she laments the propensity with which the entertainment industry is comfortable with pointing out what it views as actors’ inadequacies. The latter may be one reason why she says she’s still “humbled by the accolades” that include a Grammy, multiple BMI and ASCAP awards, and induction to the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame. There have been a lot more too; a trio of recent submissions for Emmy considerations are but a minor illustration of the 61-year-old’s genre-spanning journey through music, the stage, the small screen and the big screen. There’s one for her role as Naima, Carl Carlson’s love interest in the latest season of ‘The Simpsons’. Another for her part as Prime Minister Ángela Honig in TV sitcom Young Rock, based on the life of professional wrestler and actor Dwayne Johnson. And a third for playing Corinne Allen, one of two protagonists in last December’s sobering festive movie ‘Blackjack Christmas’, which deals with somewhat un-festive themes of bereavement, addiction and sibling rivalry.
