From a childhood spent in a tiny, grass-roofed hut in Bolans to serving as Antigua and Barbuda’s Governor-General, Sir James Carlisle’s life is a testament to perseverance, resilience, and the power of education.

In his long-awaited autobiography, A Life Shaped by Extraordinary Circumstances, the 87-year-old statesman reflects on growing up in poverty, the challenges of the Windrush generation, and the quiet strength that carried him from rural Antigua to Buckingham Palace.

But this isn’t just a memoir. It’s a message to today’s youth, one Sir James is deeply passionate about: “I wanted to remind people from whence we came; that was my main thrust,” Sir James says. “I wanted to encourage the young folks who think they have no hope that you don’t need to lead a life of crime or do drugs to succeed in life. You just need to work hard. We were born in poorer circumstances than people today; it did not prevent us from achieving something.”

From teaching villagers to read, including his own mother, to becoming a dentist and ultimately Her Majesty’s representative in Antigua for 14 years, Sir James’s journey is both deeply personal and profoundly inspirational.
