From heartfelt reflections on mental health to uplifting tales of resilience, this year’s Children’s Summer Writing Challenge brought powerful storytelling to the forefront, proving that even the youngest voices can stir the soul.

Sponsored by long-time resident and philanthropist Cheryll Rogers, and organised by the Ministry of Education, the annual contest invites students from across Antigua & Barbuda to explore big themes, ranging from identity and mental health to sports and community.

This year, more than 120 children submitted poems, essays, and dramatic pieces, with the top entries leaving a lasting impression on the judges. From Newfield Primary’s Khor Johnson, whose joyful poem celebrated gratitude and emotional wellness, to Shakeir Thomas of Antigua Grammar School, who courageously penned a poem on mental health and self-acceptance, the competition revealed the deep insight and raw talent of the nation’s youth.

The overall winner, Jhazzair Whyte from Ottos Comprehensive, captivated judges with a moving story about overcoming adversity through football and mentorship.

Winners were honoured at a celebratory luncheon at Wild Tamarind restaurant, where education officials praised the growing impact of this inspiring initiative.
