What does joy look like on canvas?

For Canadian-born artist Naydene Gonnella, it’s a burst of colour, movement, and light—paintings that evoke happiness, warmth, and the spirit of the Caribbean. After more than two decades living and working in Antigua, Naydene has become one of the region’s most captivating artistic voices, known for her vibrant portrayals of wildlife, seascapes, and whimsical botanicals.

Naydene’s art isn’t just beautiful, it’s uplifting. Each piece is a celebration of nature and imagination, often layered with thick textures, shimmering gold or copper leaf, and an electric colour palette that takes inspiration from the Caribbean’s vivid natural beauty. Her favourite subjects? Sea turtles, birds, flowers, and all things wild.

A graduate of Ontario College of Art & Design University, Naydene trained in classical techniques but soon found her own creative voice through experimentation. She discovered her love for texture early on often adding wax to oil paints to create the bold, layered strokes that have become her trademark. This technique, combined with her intuitive use of colour, gives her work an unmistakable energy.

Her work has earned her multiple scholarships, exhibitions, and a loyal following. But for Naydene, artistic success is built not just on talent, but on discipline, consistency, and resilience. Her latest series features botanical themes and tropical birds, continuing her exploration of Caribbean flora and fauna through a joyful, imaginative lens.

Naydene credits Antigua for nurturing her creativity and offering endless inspiration as she found her voice and stayed true to it.
